(Message from Msgr Ted)
This is the beginning of the Second Reading from last weekend, the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, from St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians 4: 6-9. The prayer that the priest says at Mass shortly after the Lord’s Prayer and shortly before Holy Communion includes the wish that we might be always “free from all distress”.  It is my fervent hope for all our parishioners that you might be free from anxiety, fear, anger, and distress.
As an aid that this might be possible for you, I have two suggestions:
First, try to discipline your thoughts so that you might be able to state to yourself in one clear sentence the reason for your anxiety or anger.  Then state this sentence to the Lord in prayer and ask Him that you might be freed from this anxiety or anger.
Second,  take some quiet time to pause and reflect – inhale and exhale slowly. Then pray these words in rhythm to your breathing.
Breathe Jesus in, breathe the devil out
Breathe grace in, breathe sin out
Breathe hope in, breathe worry out
Breathe courage in, breathe fear out
Breathe love in, breathe hate out
Breathe peace in, breathe anger out
Breathe life in, breathe death out
Breathe joy in, breathe sorrow out.
When peace reigns in our heart,
then there is room in our heart
to witness God’s mercy and compassion to others.
(Repeat—even more slowly)
